COVALT

COVALT is a set of translated narrative literature corpora and, at the same time, a research group from the Department of Translation and Communication of the Universitat Jaume I.

As a set of corpora it brings together both original and translations of narrative texts from German, English and French and translated into Catalan and Spanish. In addition, it also includes two comparable monolingual corpora in Catalan and Spanish.

As a research group, it has a long history that dates back to the beginning of the 2000s.

Llum Bracho Lapiedra is Doctor in Translation and Interpretation from the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón, Spain, and Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics at the Universitat Politècnica de València where she teaches Catalan for Specific Purposes. She has several publications in the field of translation including the book Environmental Translation in Catalan: Culture, Ideology and the Environment.

Josep R. Guzman Pitarch is professor at the University Jaume I, Spain. He obtained his PhD at the University of Valencia. His research interest ranges from discourse analysis to translation studies. He has translated several books, movies and tv series. He has coordinated several research projects on the use of corpora in literary translation. He is the editor of Minorized Languages in Europe: State and Survival and author of Les teories de la recepció literària and Català en context. He has also published on language learning, pragmatics and translation. His work has been published, among others, in the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, International Journal of English Studies, Caplletra, Belgian Journal of Linguistics, Zeitschrift für Katalanistik, Rassegna italiana di linguistica applicata, etc.

Heike van Lawick graduated in Catalan Studies and Spanish Literature in the Universitat de València and got her Ph.D. from the Universitat Jaume I. An associate professor in the Department of Translation and Communication in Universitat Jaume I, she has taught German translation and German language, as well as research methodologies. Between 2012 and 2015, she held a chair in the Institut für Theoretische und Angewandte Translationswissenschaft at the Universität Graz.
Her publications have focused on phraseology, contrastive linguistics with corpus methodology, stylistic analysis of literary translations, sociological aspects of translators, or the didactics of translation. She has translated audiovisual and literary texts.

Academia  

Josep Marco Borillo graduated in English at the Universitat de Barcelona (1986) and completed his PhD in Translation and Interpreting at Universitat Jaume I (1998). Since 1992 he has taught and carried out his research at the latter university, where he is currently full professor. He lectures mainly in literary translation and translation studies.

He has authored over sixty publications related to his main research areas: the translation of style, corpus-based translation studies, literary translator training and translations into Catalan in the inter-war period. Among the works just mentioned stand out the book El fil d’Ariadna. Anàlisi estilística i traducció literària (Eumo 2002), several articles published in journals such as BabelPerspectivesTargetMetaThe Interpreter and Translator TrainerAcross Languages and CulturesSendebarQuadernsTRANS or Hermenēus, and several book chapters in edited volumes published by John Benjamins, Peter Lang or Frank & Timme, amongst others.

He also translates literature from English into Catalan and Spanish. He has translated or coordinated translations of such authors as W. H. Auden, Mark Twain, Washington Irving, Herbie Brennan, Joseph Conrad, Edgar A. Poe, George Eliot, Robert L. Stevenson, A. Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, Howard P. Lovecraft, Edward Gibbon, Gerald Brenan, Oscar Wilde, Herman Melville or Henry James.

Teresa Molés-Cases is Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Linguistics of the Universitat Politècnica de València. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Translation and Interpreting (2009) and her PhD in Translation Studies from Universitat Jaume I (2015). Her research interests include translation studies, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics and language acquisition. She has teaching experience in the acquisition of translation competence and foreign languages. She has also worked as researcher and teaching assistant at Universitat Jaume I and at Universität Leipzig.

Maria D. Oltra graduated in Translation and Interpreting and obtained her PhD in Translation Studies at the Universitat Jaume I, where she currently works as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Translation and Communication Studies. She lectures mainly in general, audiovisual and literary translation (English, French, Spanish and Catalan), in Catalan language and in translation studies. She has more than fifteen years of experience as a professional translator and language consultant in different fields, and has collaborated with various publishing companies, dubbing studios or TV channels. Her research focuses mainly on the study of the translation of phraseological units in literary and audiovisual texts. 

Ulrike Oster is an Associate Professor in the Department of Translation and Communication, at the Universitat Jaume I, Castellón (Spain). She holds a PhD in Translation (Universitat Jaume I, Spain), a postgraduate diploma in Teaching German as a Foreign Language (Universität Kassel, Germany) and a degree (Diplom) in Conference Interpreting (Johannes-Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Germany). She teaches courses on German as a foreign language for translators and interpreters, conference interpreting, contrastive semantics and corpus-based translation studies, for both BA and MA programmes. Her research interests lie mainly in the field of corpus-based approaches to contrastive semantics and translation studies.

Gemma Peña is Doctor in Philology from the Universitat de València, and Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics at the Universitat Politècnica de València where she teaches French for Academic and Professional Purposes. Her research focuses on Contrastive linguistics, Cognitive linguistics and Critical discourse analysis.

Isabell Tello. After accomplishing her studies on Translation and Interpreting at Universitat Jaume I (Castelló de la Plana, Spain) and a Master's Degree in Creative and Humanistic Translation at Universitat de València (València, Spain), Isabel Tello got her European PhD in Translation and Interpreting at Universitat Jaume I.

She has been working as a freelance translator and translation teacher for more than ten years at both public and private institutions. Her working languages are English, French and Spanish. Her main research fields are the translation of the linguistic variation and the didactics of translation. She has published journal articles and presented papers in national and international conferences of the area. She is now the Director of the BA in Translation and Interpreting at the International University of Valencia.
